As a European who lives in the US, it took me a while, but I get it now: It's not that they have "given up", it's jut that those in power legit don't care who dies. The decision-makers are removed from the most affected populations and they'd rather "save the economy".

And, to clarify, I offer this explanation not as commentary on how awful the powers that be are in the US right now (which they are), but rather as a genuine explanation, from one baffled outsider to another.

It is hard to overstate just how deeply incomprehensible I have found it, and how much (and for how long!) I've tried to find alternate explanations to the behavior. Because I find it hard to believe that anyone is Bad Evil People. Sure they are confused? Misinformed? Sick?

But, as the kids say these days: when someone shows you who they are, believe them. And the ones calling the shots right now in the US are ghouls that care only about their own necks and their mounds of gold (not necessarily in that order).
