Charities are too often paternalistic, as they are not owned or governed by those who are helped. The relationship between person helping and being helped itself puts the one helping above the one being helped. Cooperatives on the other hand are based on mutual help, owned and governed by people helping themselves.
You are correct, that is a rather unfair generalization.
