Today will be the peak of the heat, but only by a matter of degrees. We won’t see any real relief until later this week.
Here in Orwell, our heat index will be pushing 100 today. Whether it hits that milestone is immaterial—with temperatures topping out around 90 much of the awfulness will be thanks to the humidity.

Dew points will cross 70 around 9 AM, making it feel incredibly humid. By mid-afternoon, when the heat will peak, we’ll see dew points as high as 76, which will be utterly oppressive.
Orwell will be in the Extreme category for WBGT today. As a reminder, that’s like a new and improved heat index, and extreme means “don’t do any activity outside if you can at all put it off.”

The combination of heat and humidity will be nearly unbearable to the body today, so if you have to be outside, stay in the shade and hydrated.
The National Weather Service is calling for the heat wave to break late on Friday, but it will come at the cost of potentially severe weather. Nothing is clear yet, but be aware that Friday could see flooding. The NWS plans to make that call about flooding risk later today.
