Hey all my connections who are #ssb #scuttlebutt users: Do you run your own pub server? Would you recommend it? Do you have an alternative recommendation?
@Greg @thcipriani @joeyh i'm on there intermittently - i don't run a pub, but i've thought about setting one up somewhere (at least insofar as i understand how a pub works, which i might not). there's a lot about ssb that hasn't quite gelled in my head yet.
@brennen A Question for you (copy/paste from Freenode):
My local diary (.ssb) is very important, obviously, but,
A) what happens if I lose it (eg harddrive crash) and,
B) what is the relation between my identity and my local .ssb with respect to using multiple computers (eg: a phone client)? (sorry if these questions have incorrect assumptions embedded in them)
@Greg i think your assumptions are probably correct: the key that identifies you lives there, i'm pretty sure, and as of yet there is no especially useful multi-device story (beyond you can move the .ssb to another device).
@Greg it could also be that you're just supposed to hold the identity a little lighter and have multiple keys on multiple devices if that's what you want to do, but i'm not entirely sure what the cultural assumptions are there.
@Greg yeah, but no -- let's just say that ssb does not meet my requirements for software I run on my servers
(neither does mastadon)
@joeyh sad face
@Greg anyway no need for a server if you can get a globally routable IP address; run a p2p ssb node..
Alright, I'm on #SSB:
@L0XL1TZMA82mZMsVt1yJlIDYjs4psed03iKO6zgUub4=.ed25519
that me ^
(my secret is now securely backed up as well, so this should be me in the future as well)
@Greg afaict there's no multi-device story yet; the issue quickly got bogged down in crazy hypotheticals involving smart contracts: https://github.com/ssbc/patchwork/issues/484
@Greg curious if that's working for you, since it seems you unfollowed your pub and might not have gotten fully into the network
@joeyh there was confusion on that part (following the pub; there was a second one involved but it didn't work properly, which is what I thought I unfollowed...). Better?
@Greg yeah, your posts are getting out now
@Greg I'd dig up my ID on SSB, but my Thinkpad seems to have developed a habit of randomly crashing when I try to do anything ambitious, like opening Google Maps or Patchwork.
@Greg I'm on SSB occasionally. Though not often, given how unpleasant a user experience Patchworks is for me.
@liw yeah, so far SSB is mostly a novelty thing for me. I love the idea in theory.
I know @joeyh at least, @thcipriani , and @brennen (right?)
