The cool thing about visiting the North Carolina mountains is, that spring and summer always come more slowly here. Trees that leafed out a month ago in Raleigh still sit mostly dormant on Beech Mountain here in mid-May. The rhododendron that is now blooming back home won't show here until late June and July.
